Early infrastructure

Early bitcoin infrastructure.

One of Canada's earliest bitcoin exchanges, founded in Toronto in 2013 and closed by regulatory oversight on 30 May 2014, after which it kept going as an advocate for Canadian bitcoin users.

One of the earliest infrastructure bets, built while the legal terrain was still moving underfoot.

Timing can break a good system as surely as code can. When a market is early, regulatory clarity becomes part of product design.

Why it mattered

The problem

Bitcoin infrastructure in 2013 and 2014 sat in a legal gray zone. The product problem was inseparable from the regulatory one.

The approach

Build a secure exchange path for Canadians while engaging regulators and compliance requirements directly.

What held up

The exchange closed in 2014 with the question it ran into, whether bitcoin was a security, still unanswered. It became a formative lesson in risk-aware company building and infrastructure timing.

Looking back

Then

The work was early, practical, and direct: build the thing, register properly, and test the edge of the market.

Now

The archive holds evidence of early recognition and a willingness to work in hard terrain.

What stayed with me

Timing can break a good system as surely as code can. When a market is early, regulatory clarity becomes part of product design.
